Following the 2nd Conference on Buddhism in Catalonia (27 November 2010), we have received proposals for the following new working groups: Buddhist Economics, The Contribution of Women, and Art and Buddhism.
As a result of the broad participatory interest you expressed during and following the 1st Conference on Buddhism in Catalonia, the theme of which was Socially Engaged Buddhism, we would like to inform you that the following groups have already begun work.
Those interested in joining a working group can contact the corresponding coordinator.
· Translation of Buddhist terminology
Coordinator: Pepa Forn - pepaforn@gmail.com
General objective :
To make Buddhist texts and texts on Buddhism, covering all the Buddhist traditions, more accessible, using clear, contemporary language.
A list will be produced of texts translated into Catalan and Spanish, with a descriptive record for each book. This list will be made available on the CCEB's website.
The working group will begin work on a glossary, prioritising terms that are shared by all the Buddhist traditions.
The group will consider beginning the translation into Catalan of texts on habitual practices that the different traditions would like translating.
· Living one's own death and that of others
Coordinator: Nicole Martínez-Melis - nicole.martinez@uab.es
Objectives:
- Phase 1: Data will be gathered to enable the Buddhist community of Catalonia to better understand all aspects of this theme: classical Buddhist texts, Buddhist publications, support groups in Catalonia, the situation in hospitals, legal aspects, members of the Sangha who work in medicine, witnesses, living wills, etc.
- Phase 2: The data will be used to make proposals for action, according to the interest of the participants: meetings, seminars, training courses, publications, translations, contacts with policymakers, a hospital environment, etc.
· Buddhism and contemporary psychologies
Coordinator: Herminia Roura - hrourab@copc.cat
Objectives:
- Phase 1: Research into the common or equivalent theoretical and practical elements between the different ways in which there is interaction between Western psychology and Buddhism (psychoanalysis and dynamic psychologies: humanistic, gestalt, cognitive-behavioural therapy and third-generation therapies such as mindfulness and acceptance and commitment therapies).
Summary of all the bibliography related to the field in English, French, Spanish and Catalan.
- Phase 2: Presentation of the results to different institutions related to psychology: Professional psychology associations, universities, etc.
Organisation of lectures and roundtable discussions with the participation of national and international experts.
• Buddhism and human rights
Coordinator: Matilde Seuba - masibudis@hotmail.com
Objectives:
Buddhist ethics and compassion demands a commitment from us towards people suffering as a result of their rights being violated, leading to insecurity, exclusion and indignity.
Initially we will meet to put forward the different ideas on what we can do through the CCEB in specific cases and/or globally, according to each situation.
· Buddhism and education
Coordinator: Ramon Martí - r.marticomes@hotmail.com
General objectives:
To apply the wisdom provided by Buddhism to education, enabling students to:
- Discover and appropriately use their own emotions.
- Develop empathy towards fellow students.
- Acquire holistic knowledge to help them interpret and connect with the interdependent, plural reality that surrounds them.
- Acquire techniques that improve academic performance based on meditation.
- Adjust their external knowledge to their internal growth and vice versa.
Phase 1:
A meeting of all those who wish to participate so they can present specific proposals and explain how to carry them out.
In addition to professionals (from primary, secondary and university education), it would be useful for interested parents to participate.
You can propose the creation of any other working group of interest by e-mailing the CCEB: info@ccebudistes.org
Activity report
2010
Throughout its history, ever since its origins more than 2,500 years ago, Buddhism has blended into and adapted to the different host cultures that have received it. This year's conference dealt with the main trends and unique characteristics of Buddhism today, as well as the religion's challenges and proposals in our Western society.
During the conference, various fundamental themes were discussed, including: transfer and practice, the perspective and contribution of women, social commitment, and spirituality and science. These themes were dealt with through discussions between experts in each field and open, participatory debates that served to gather together the opinions and experiences of the practisers of the various Buddhist traditions.
To commemorate Gandhi's birthday and support the Buddhist monks of Tibet, Vietnam and Burma in the peaceful struggle against injustice.
